Using good images can boost a newsletter or brochure but it's not just cosmetic uses of digital imaging that can benefit a business. Fax machines and scanners have been an essential part of the office for a number of years now.

Think of scanners like a photocopier which sends an image to screen rather than producing it on a piece of paper. You can scan both text and images with a scanner. With the right piece of software (OCR) you can actually transfer the text on the paper to your word processor.

Fax machines connect via a telephone line. Documents can be sent from one machine to another, allowing information to be shared quickly in the original form.

Digital cameras mix the fun of photography with the satisfaction of quick results. Within a matter of minutes you can take a photo, download it to a PC and have it printed or published on a website. Some cameras even connect directly to a printer.

If you are wanting to produce good quality photos with a digital scanner then you would need a minimum resolution of 2 million pixels. You may also need to think about upgrading your printer if you want clear quality pictures.

For purely web based images, you do not need such a high resolution as there is a limit on the resolution that can be displayed.
